As part of this observance, members of the Bureau’s Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team (ECIT) are wearing green patches provided by the Behavioral Health Unit. These patches may be worn on the uniform, jacket, or external vest and serve as both a symbol of awareness and a tool to initiate conversations with community members and mental health stakeholders.
Video Message from Lieutenant Nathan Sheppard
In the video above, Lieutenant Nathan Sheppard reflects on the evolving understanding of mental health within law enforcement and society at large. He highlights the importance of supporting individuals who may be navigating mental illness or mental health issues and reinforces the Bureau’s commitment to compassionate service.
About ECIT and the Green Patch Initiative
The Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team is comprised of officers who receive specialized training to respond to calls involving individuals in mental or behavioral health crisis. In addition to their own patch, each ECIT officer receives a second patch intended to be shared with a community member who may have an interest in the program or in advocating for additional mental health resources.
This initiative reflects the Portland Police Bureau’s ongoing efforts to improve responses to mental health-related calls and strengthen community trust.
Continued Commitment
Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity to acknowledge progress, share resources, and engage in meaningful dialogue. The Portland Police Bureau encourages continued awareness and collaboration throughout the year to support the mental well-being of all members of the community.
