On Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 9:49 a.m., a Portland Police Officer located a parked, occupied stolen vehicle, a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee, in the area of Northwest 14th Avenue and Northwest Johnson Street. He requested cover units to assist, but before they could arrive the driver pulled away onto the street. The officer was initiating a traffic stop, but the suspect driver preemptively eluded the officer, accelerating above the speed limit and turning southbound 10th Avenue from Northwest Marshall Street, which is against the one-way traffic. Officers turned off their overhead emergency police lights to avoid pushing him to continue his dangerous driving, but then he lost control and crashed into a streetcar stop at Northwest 10th Avenue and Northwest Glisan Street.
A Portland Streetcar was serving that stop at the time of the crash, and at least three people were nearly struck. They scrambled out of the way and no one was hurt.
The driver of the stolen vehicle jumped out and ran, but the officer quickly overtook him, did a takedown, and arrested the driver. He was transported to the hospital, treated and released, then transported by police vehicle to jail (case number 25-28160).
Edgar Castro, 29, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of:
Attempt to Elude Police by Vehicle
Reckless Driving (5 counts)
Recklessly Endangering Another Person (3 counts)
Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (alcohol)
Possession of a Stolen Vehicle
Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle
Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver (property damage)
Criminal Mischief in the First Degree
