The pedestrian killed in a crash in North Portland has been identified.

The pedestrian killed in a crash in North Portland on December 5, 2025, has been identified as 65-year-old James J. Hatton. His family has been notified of his death.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Hatton stepped off the curb and into the eastbound lane of traffic before being struck by two vehicles.

Traffic #Alert: N. Columbia Blvd Closed for Fatal Crash Investigation

On Friday, December 5, 2025 at 7:17 p.m., Portland Police Officers assigned to North Precinct responded to a report of a crash on North Columbia Boulevard near North Hurst Way. When officers arrived they found an adult male deceased at the scene. Two involved drivers in separate vehicles remained at the scene. 

The Portland Police Traffic Division MCT responded to the scene and is investigating the crash. During the investigation, North Columbia Boulevard is closed between North Fiske Avenue and North Chautauqua Boulevard. Heavy rail traffic is also closed through that area.

The PIO is not responding to the scene. Additional information will be released when appropriate. 

This is the 41st traffic related fatality of 2025 in Portland.
