Driver Facing Charges After Crashing into PPB Employee's vehicle

Press Release
A driver is facing numerous charges after crashing into an on-duty Portland Police Public Safety Support Specialist (PS3).
Published

On Friday, December 12, 2025 at 2:05 a.m., a PS3 radioed that he had been hit by another driver at West Burnside Street at Northwest 2nd Avenue.

The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles, but the driver of the other vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz C300 4-door sedan, tried to keep driving. An officer spotted the suspect vehicle driving away and stopped it at Northwest 3rd Avenue and Northwest Couch Street.

The driver, Assane Diop, 42, of Portland, was arrested. During his arrest, he was found in possession of a substance that tested presumptively positive for cocaine. He was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, treated, and released to go to jail.

Diop was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) on charges of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Reckless Driving, Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver, and Possession of Cocaine.

The PS3 was taken to the hospital as a precaution, treated, and released to recover at home.
