The driver involved in an injury crash on I-84 has been identified as 20-year-old Gabriel A. Dorton. After being transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Dorton was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on the following charges: Assault in the Second Degree, Assault in the Third Degree, Reckless Driving, and Reckless Endangerment of Highway Workers (three counts). 

No further information will be released at this time.

The investigation is continuing by PPB's Traffic Investigations Unit. The involved driver was arrested and is expected to be booked on criminal charges. He will be identified at a later time.

Traffic #ALERT: Westbound I-84 is Closed for Serious Injury Crash Investigation

Interstate 84 westbound is closed between Northeast 181st Avenue in Gresham to Northeast 148th Avenue in Portland for an investigation into a serious injury crash involving a traffic control worker.

On Thursday, October 2, 2025 at 8:56 p.m., Portland Police Officers from North Precinct and the Traffic Division responded to a crash on the westbound Banfield Freeway (I-84) at Northeast 148th Avenue. A pedestrian, preliminarily identified as a traffic management contract employee, was struck by a driver. The driver subsequently crashed into a barrier and stopped.

The pedestrian was transported to the hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. The patient's prognosis is unknown, but the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The driver involved was not transported, remained on scene, and is cooperating with police.

The crash caused traffic to stop, and hundreds of vehicles were caught in the backup. PPB and Gresham Police Department officers are closing all of the access ramps west of Northeast 181st Avenue.

The Portland Police Traffic Division Major Crash Team is responding to the scene to investigate the crash.
