As Chief of Police and in my private life, I strongly value conducting myself with the utmost integrity.

After the death of our son Sam in 2016 to Ewing Sarcoma, the Sam Day Foundation was launched to provide funding for research of rare cancers. While I do not oversee this nonprofit, I can see how my deep affiliation with it could inadvertently be intertwined with my role as Chief of Police. Even the perception of impropriety would erode trust in my leadership.
In consultation with the City Attorney regarding the City of Portland’s Administrative Rule 11.02 Prohibited Conduct, I made the decision to make a public statement regarding this matter. I want to ensure that the community and Bureau employees know that I understand and acknowledge this rule and will not violate it in my role as Chief.
