On Friday, October 14, 2022, at 6:07p.m, Central Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of suspicious circumstances in the area of Southwest 13th Avenue and Southwest Jefferson Street. A 911 caller reported a male chasing people with a knife. At 6:09p.m, the first officer arrived on scene. The officer located a man matching the description of the suspect in the area of Southwest 12th Avenue and Southwest Jefferson Street. During the ensuing encounter, the officer fired his weapon and the suspect was injured. Officers provided immediate medical aid to the suspect, including applying a tourniquet.

The suspect in this incident, 45-year-old Jeremy J. Rieck  was transported by ambulance to the hospital where he received treatment. He was released later that day was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and a parole detainer.
 
The involved officer was Officer Jonah Gellman, a 3-year veteran of PPB.

The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office reviewed the case and issued a memorandum stating the officer's actions were not criminal. 

As part of the use of force review process, the Bureau conducts an internal review of the entire incident and the case will go before the Police Review Board (PRB), which is composed of community members, Bureau members and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
