Registering your bike is one of the most important steps you can take to protect it and improve the chances that it can be returned if it is stolen or recovered.
A serial number helps police identify a bike and establish ownership. However, the serial number is only useful when it has been recorded and connected to its owner.
The Portland Police Bureau partners with 529 Garage to provide free bike registration.
Register your bike with 529 Garage
What you will need
Before beginning, gather as much of the following information as possible:
- Your bike’s serial number
- Manufacturer and model
- Frame and accent colors
- Photographs of the bike
- Purchase information, if available
- Your current email address and phone number
Find your bike’s serial number
On many pedal bikes, the serial number is stamped into the frame underneath the bottom bracket, near where the pedal cranks connect to the bike.
Serial numbers may also appear on the head tube, seat tube, rear stays, or another part of the frame. Electric-bike serial numbers may be located in different places depending on the manufacturer and model.
If you cannot find the serial number, check the owner’s manual, purchase records, manufacturer’s website, or contact a bicycle shop or the manufacturer.
Include your phone number
529 Garage allows registrants to provide optional phone and text-message numbers. Include current contact information and allow participating law enforcement agencies to access it.
A phone number may help police quickly contact you by call or text if your bike is recovered. It can also help officers confirm ownership or ask questions about a registration or theft report.
Update your 529 Garage account whenever your phone number, email address, or other contact information changes.

Request bike registration assistance
Get a free 529 Shield
After registering, Portland residents may request a free 529 Shield while supplies are available.
The shield is a tamper-resistant identification decal with a unique code that can be added to your bike’s 529 Garage registration. It shows that the bike is registered and provides another way to connect the bike with its registration record.
Because supplies are limited, shield availability and the number provided may be restricted.

Request a 529 Shield or registration assistance
Bring confirmation that your bike has been registered. Shields are available only while supplies last.
If your bike is stolen
Registration does not replace a police report. Filing a report helps police identify recovered property, document bicycle theft, and investigate patterns of criminal activity.
If your bike is stolen:
- Mark the bike as stolen in 529 Garage.
- Report the theft to the Portland Police Bureau.
- Provide the bike’s serial number and 529 registration information.
- Provide photographs, receipts, and other identifying information when available.
- Keep the police report number for your records.
For a theft that is not currently occurring, call the police non-emergency line at 503-823-3333.

Call 911 when a theft is occurring now, someone is in immediate danger, or an immediate police response is needed.
