On September 18, 2004, at about 1:00 p.m., Portland Fire Bureau (PFB) responded to 9742 N James Street, to the report of smoke coming from the house. Once PFB was on scene they observed smoke inside the residence. They made entry into the home where the victim, Thomas Swift, a 57-year-old white male, was lying on the ground of the main floor of the residence. Firefighters pulled the Mr. Swift out of the house and found he had a gunshot wound. The State Medical Examiner later determined that Mr. Swift had died from his gunshot wound.

Mr. Smith was described as being a very private person and would not disclose information regarding his personal life. He was known to frequent Sauvie Island on Columbia Beach. The Cold Case Unit would like anyone with information regarding this case to contact them.
