On the evening of July 3, 1987, an individual walking near the intersection of NW 1st and Everett Street found the victim, Tracey Birkenfield, a 31-year-old white man, deceased in the grassy area northeast of the intersection. An autopsy revealed Mr. Birkenfield died as the result of multiple stab wounds.

Tracey Birkenfield was reported to be a transient who frequented the lower area of old town and was a heavy user of drugs. It is believed that Mr. Birkenfield may have been killed due to problems regarding a bad drug deal.
