On the evening of November 2, 1975, Sharon Coleman, a 25-year old African-American female, suffering from a gunshot wound, was driven to a local hospital by a friend. Ms. Coleman was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
Ms. Coleman had been driving southbound on NE Union Avenue (now Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.) in a 1969 yellow Buick Skylark near the intersection of NE Union and NE Lombard between 6 and 7 p.m. when an unknown car occupied by an unknown number of suspects pulled up asking to talk to Sharon and her friend. The suspects fired shots into the vehicle, striking Ms. Coleman. Seeing that she had been hit, her friend moved her to the passenger seat and drove to a nearby hospital.
Sharon Coleman was a single mother with a young daughter. Ms. Coleman worked for Pacific Northwest Bell and had no known criminal record.
