At approximately 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday January 17, 1995, Portland Police Officers responded to a 9-1-1 call of “shots fired” in the area of 3500 block of N. Missouri Avenue. Officers searched the area and found the front door of 3543 N. Missouri Ave to be open and could see the victim lying face down on the floor of the dining room. The victim, 23 year-old Hispanic male Martin Tafolla-Sanchez, had died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

The house where the shooting took place at 3543 N. Missouri Ave. was frequented by multiple Hispanic males and was rumored to be used to deal drugs. Multiple witnesses state that there was a group of individuals, both male and female, were present at the house prior to the shooting. Martin shot at the suspect several times before the suspect produced a firearm and returned fire, killing Martin. It has been reported that Martin had been drinking that night and was known to have a temper when he was intoxicated.
