FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Portland, OR, Oct. 10, 2024 – The Portland Housing Bureau (PHB) is proud to announce an award of $7 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to remediate lead hazards from the homes of low-income homeowners and renters in Portland with children under the age of six. The award includes an additional $750,000 for supplemental home repairs to address radon and other health and safety hazards.

This award will help PHB build substantially upon existing lead remediation and home repair programming provided by PHB's Neighborhood Housing Preservation (NHP) team, which currently serves an average of 31 Portland households per year. The new funding is expected to serve 136 households over the next four years, and will support the addition of two new team members to provide lead remediation services.

PHB Director Helmi A. Hisserich thanked HUD for the significant award, adding "I am incredibly proud of our Neighborhood Housing Preservation team for their dedication to addressing health hazards for low-income Portlanders. Their successful application for this funding means improved health and safety for hundreds of children and adults in our most vulnerable communities."
