What is disc golf?
Disc golf is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target, typically a metal basket. The objective is to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws, similar to traditional golf. The game is played on a course with nine or 18 holes, and players navigate through various terrains and obstacles, such as trees and water hazards. Disc golf is accessible to people of all ages and skill levels, offering a fun and engaging way to enjoy the outdoors.
Parks with disc golf courses
Currently, Pier Park is the only City of Portland park with a disc golf course.
John Luby Park is being considered as a potential site for a new disc golf course. Learn more about that on the John Luby Park page.
Disc golf rules and guidelines
- Respect the Course: Follow all posted rules and guidelines specific to each course. This includes respecting park hours and any temporary closures due to maintenance or events.
- Safety First: Always be aware of other players and park visitors. Wait until the area is clear before throwing.
- Tee Throws: Tee throws must be completed within the designated tee area. Typically, players start each hole by throwing from a concrete or marked tee pad.
- Fairway Throws: Fairway throws must be made from the spot where the previous throw landed. The player's stance should not exceed one meter behind the lie.
- Completing the Hole: A hole is completed when the disc lands in the basket or the chains.
- Out of Bounds: If a throw lands out of bounds, the player must take their next throw from the point where the disc went out of bounds, adding one penalty stroke to their score.
Course maintenance and improvements
We are committed to maintaining and improving parks and natural areas across the city, including the disc golf course at Pier Park. This includes regular mowing, tree trimming, and course layout adjustments when necessary in order to protect the environment and keep the course fresh. With this in mind, we aim to provide a safe and fun environment for disc golf players.
Community partners
We collaborate with several community partners to maintain and improve the disc golf courses. Notable partners include:
- Stumptown Disc Golf: A local organization that supports disc golf through volunteer efforts and events.
- Friends of Pier Park: A community group dedicated to preserving and enhancing Pier Park, including its disc golf course.
- Bureau of Environmental Services (BES): Collaborates on projects that affect disc golf courses, ensuring environmental protection and sustainability.
