Marshall Park Neighborhood Association and other partners welcome all to celebration Saturday, June 13

(Portland, OR) –

Portland Parks & Recreation and the Marshall Park Neighborhood Association (MPNA) will hold a free community celebration to dedicate the new playground at southwest Portland’s Marshall Park.  City leaders, partners and neighbors will gather on Saturday, June 13 from 11am-1pm.

The playground at Marshall Park (9200 SW 12th Drive) opened for use on January 23, 2015.  It immediately became a valued and extensively used community asset.

WHAT: Marshall Park playground dedication and community celebration

WHEN: Saturday, June 13, 11am-1pm

WHERE: Marshall Park.  Take Taylor’s Ferry Ct., then first right onto SW 12th Drive.

Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) thanks the Friends of Marshall and Maricara Parks and the Marshall Park Neighborhood Association for their continued efforts and partnership.  The playground replacement was made possible by a grant from Oregon Parks & Recreation Department– Local Government Grants (State Parks) and System Development Charges, or SDCs. SDCs are one-time fees on new development to provide funding for the City to meet the infrastructure needs created by growth.  Additional funds were supplied by the SWNI (Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc.) neighborhood grant program, and donated services by Rob Lennox, Bluedot group.

“Some of the volunteers who helped in the fundraising and advocacy for this playground grew up playing there,” says Portland Parks & Recreation Director Mike Abbaté.  “They played on the old equipment that had to be removed for safety reasons several years ago.  It’s very gratifying to have this sparkling new playground for current and future generations to enjoy.”

Notable guests at the playground dedication include Commissioner Amanda Fritz, PP&R Director Mike Abbaté, OPRD Deputy Director MG Devereux, John DeLance of Friends of Marshall Park and Amy Steingrebe of the Marshall Park Neighborhood Association.

“Our staff and contractors take great pride in the work they do,” adds Director Abbaté.  “They put safety first, but in conjunction with a world-class recreation experience.  It’s delightful to see the many children and parents enjoying the new Marshall Park playground so much, and I’m very much looking forward to the formal dedication.”

The Marshall Park general contractor was Duke Construction & Excavation, LLC from Damascus, Oregon.  The environmental exploration area was created by PP&R’s City Nature staff.  Greenworks, PC did design work and construction drawings.
