Through the Years, Through Our Eyes: A Teen View of Peninsula Park

(Portland,OR) –

The premiere screening of a remarkable teen production, the Peninsula Park Centennial Documentary, takes place on Sunday, December 29th at 2pm at the Hollywood Theatre. Admission is free.

Peninsula Park and Peninsula Park Community Center recently celebrated 100 years of serving our city. The all-volunteer Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden (FOPPRG) and our valued non-profit partner Portland Parks Foundation are proud partners in the centennial celebration and projects.

The Hollywood Theatre's support of the Portland Parks & Recreation documentary project has given young people the chance to learn filmmaking skills while celebrating 100 years of Portland’s first community center and public rose gardens at Peninsula Park.

"The class, held through Portland Parks & Recreation and using cameras and sound equipment provided by The Hollywood Theatre, began with lectures and experiments in film techniques. Instructors Billy Miller and Carlos Lasuncet taught the boys the best way to frame a shot. They coached them to position interview subjects at an angle so their scenes won't look flat. And they taught them how to ask questions that will yield stories, not yes or no answers."

Students spent weeks interviewing Portland Parks & Recreation experts and filming video of the city's oldest rose garden with guidance from the pros. Miller is a professional filmmaker who teaches film at da Vinci Arts Middle School. Lasunce is a science, music and film teacher at Open Meadow School.

Admission is free at the December 29 screening. PeninsulaParkCommunity Center staffers are holding a canned food drive to benefit the Portland Police Bureau’s Sunshine Division, as well as a coat drive for Trillium Family Services. Moviegoers will enjoy a panel discussion featuring the teen filmmakers, and light refreshments will be served.

The Portland Parks Foundation and Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden (FOPPRG) are teaming up for a raffle on site. The Friends group, made up solely of volunteers dedicated to caring for Portland’s oldest public rose garden, will also graciously accept donations.
