(Portland,OR) –

Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) and Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden (FPPRG) will welcome volunteers to help with planting nearly 3,200 new, hardy, disease-resistant roses in Portland’s oldest public rose garden at Peninsula Park.

The planting will enhance the garden ahead of the centennial celebration this June. PP&R staff will lead the rose planting, which will take place from Tuesday, February 19 through Friday, February 22.

“The project for the hardy new roses a tPeninsula is a terrific example of partnership,” beams Ann Gardner, president of the newly formed FPRG and OSU Master Gardener. “It’s the result of collaboration between Portland Parks & Recreation and its marvelous staff, Master Gardeners, the Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden, many valued city businesses, volunteers, and the Portland Parks Foundation. We are grateful for all their help and hope we can serve as a model of the success of such public-private partnerships.”

PP&R appreciates the willingness of so many neighborhood, business, community, and Master Gardener volunteers who have committed to work on this project.  Valued volunteers for the project consist of private citizens, employees at Wells Fargo, Standard Insurance, OSU Extension Services Master Gardeners, the Leach Botanical Garden, and the Royal Rosarians. However, donations are needed to complete the project at the city’s historic rose garden.

WHAT: Volunteers and PP&R staff planting nearly 3,200 new roses at Peninsula Park Rose Garden

WHEN: Tuesday, February 19 through Friday, February 22 beginning at 9am through 2pm.

WHERE: Peninsula Park Rose Garden, N. Albina & N. Ainsworth St.

Oregon State University (OSU) Master Gardeners are partners in the planting project. Weeks Roses, Star Roses and Baileys Nursery have all donated roses to plant at Peninsula Park Rose Garden - a retail value of approximately $100,000. Wilbur Ellis donated 4.5 tons of lime, a nearly $2,000 value - all of which has been applied to the beds.

The varieties of roses being planted are designed not just to be durable, but sweetly fragrant and remarkably gorgeous.

Portland Parks & Recreation and the newly formed Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden are working to raise about $15,000 to install a thick mulch layer as we plant the nearly 3,200 new roses in the park. The mulch will hold moisture and provide a barrier against pests such as the rose midge.
