Portland Parks & Recreation’s Rose City Golf Course clubhouse,2200 NE 71st Ave., has been officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Built in 1932, the clubhouse at Rose City is a beautiful, brick building with steep pitched roofs. Inside, golfers are welcomed in the Hank Childs pro shop. They can spend time before or after a round in the Rose City Grill where breakfast, lunch and snacks are available every day.
The National Register of Historic Places is the official federal list of properties that are significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, and engineering. “Listing in the National Register is intended to provide recognition of a property’s significance as well as its preservation,” writes Roger Roper, Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.
“There not many places in golf that have the character and charm as the Rose City club house,” beams Rose City golf pro Hank Childs.
“It was built in an era where golf was more than just a recreational game, where people came together socially to talk golf and enjoy the camaraderie of the game. It's a wonderful part of the game that now is rare to find, but still exists today at RC.”
The outside of the historic clubhouse has not changed much since its original construction; however the inside has gone through numerous changes. The building now features an impressive rock fireplace and large finished beams with a fir tongue and grove ceiling. The clubhouse was opened in 1932, designed by architect Herbert A Angell.
Rose City Golf Course hopes to use the national historical listing as a way to acquire funds for an eventual restoration of the clubhouse. Staffers are hopeful that a restored clubhouse on the National Register of Historic Places would be natural draw for more business, drawing more private tournament and events, and making the restaurant a neighborhood gathering place.
“But most importantly, a renovation would even further enhance the charm and character of our historic facility, and encourage the vibrant social life to the neighborhood,” adds Childs. “With our new national historic designation, a restored clubhouse would be something that the PP&R and the City ofPortlandcould long be proud of.”
