Wilkes Park - Greening Wilkes Planting Event

Volunteer Event
Join Portland Parks & Recreation and partner organizations to plant wildflowers at Wilkes Creek Headwaters and help care for neighboring natural areas. Free lunch and plant giveaway!

The event is organized by the Greening Wilkes Collaborative, which is focused on improving green spaces and engaging the community surrounding Wilkes Park, Wilkes Creek Headwaters, and Wilkes Natural Area. This year, Portland Parks & Recreation, Friends of Trees, Verde, Columbia Slough Watershed Council, and Oregon Bird Alliance (formally Portland Audubon) have teamed up together to offer stewardship opportunities in Wilkes Creek Headwaters and Wilkes Creek Natural Area, and a free lunch, and free plant giveaway at Wilkes City Park. 

  • 10am-12:30pm: planting and stewardship activities. Please sign up on the Friends of Trees website. 
  • 12pm-2pm: Celebration - free lunch, and free native plant and tree giveaway at Wilkes Park! No registration required for this portion.

Meeting location: Wilkes Park: 3655 Northeast 154th Ave., Portland 97230. We will walk to our project site from there.

Parking and public transit:  Parking is available on the street. 

Public transit: take the #21 bus line to NE 154th and Sandy. Walk ¼ mile south on NE 154th and Wilkes Park will be on your right. More information at trimet.org

Children are welcome. Any child under 14 years of age needs to beaccompanied by an attentive adult. 

Accessibility:  This event will require bending over and walking on uneven surfaces. A portable restroom will be available at this site (not ADA compliant).

Getting Ready for the Event:

Thank you for helping to keep Portland parks healthy and beautiful! Here are a few tips to get you ready for your stewardship event.

  • Registration is required for all stewardship events. 
  • All tools, gloves and training to do the task is provided
  • Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness.    
  • In order to ensure your comfort and safety, please remember to dress for the weather, wear close-toed shoes, bring a water bottle, and be ready to get dirty! 
  • While groups are welcome to join many of our regularly scheduled stewardship events, please contact the event coordinator listed in the description before arriving with a large group. This will ensure that there are enough gloves and tools for everyone to work.
