Wilkes Creek Headwaters - Plant Care and Mulching Event

Please join Portland Parks & Recreation, Join Portland Parks & Recreation, Friends of Trees and other partner organizations to plant wildflowers at Wilkes Creek Headwaters and help care for neighboring natural areas. Then, enjoy free lunch and plant giveaway!
10:00 am to 1:30 pm

Project Details 

This event is organized by the Greening Wilkes Collaborative, which is focused on improving green spaces and engaging the community surrounding Wilkes Park, Wilkes Creek Headwaters, and Wilkes Natural Area. This year, Portland Parks & Recreation, Friends of Trees, Verde, and Oregon Bird Alliance have teamed up together to offer stewardship opportunities in Wilkes Creek Headwaters and Wilkes Creek Natural Area, and a free lunch, and free plant giveaway at Wilkes City Park. Come join us! 

  • 10am-12pm: planting and stewardship activities at Wilkes Creek Headwaters. The stewardship portion of this event is full. Join us at the celebration! 
  • 12pm-1:30pm: Celebration - free lunch, and free native plant and tree giveaway at Wilkes Park. No registration required for the celebration portion. 

Please join Portland Parks & Recreation, Friends of Trees and POIC Rosemary Anderson High School Natural Resources program to mulch and weed around recently planted native wildflowers and shrubs at Wilkes Creek Headwaters. 

Did you know there are over 500 different species of bees native to Oregon? Planting native wildflowers helps support pollinators like bees and butterflies and improves habitat for local wildlife. 

Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy, waterproof shoes, and bring personal water bottle and snacks. Tools, gloves, project instruction, coffee/tea and light snacks will be provided.

Parking and Public Transit: 

There is street parking along NE Fremont and NE 154th. Or use Plan your trip | TriMet for public transit. 

Meeting Location

Stewardship will meet at the Wilkes Creek Headwaters entrance at at the intersection of NE 154th Ave and NE Fremont Street.

The celebration will be at Wilkes City Park

Children are welcome

Any child under 14 years of age needs to be accompanied by an attentive adult. 

Site Description/Accessibility

We will be working in an area that has uneven ground and some sloped areas, with tall thick grass. There will be a porta potty (non ADA compliant) within walking distance.


Helpful information for participants

Thank you for helping to keep Portland parks healthy and beautiful! 

Here are a few tips to get you ready for your stewardship event.

  • In order to ensure your comfort and safety, please remember to dress for the weather, wear close-toed shoes, bring a water bottle, and be ready to get dirty!
  • Registration is required for all stewardship events, unless otherwise noted.
  • Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness.
  • All tools, gloves and training to do the task is provided.
  • While groups are welcome to join many of our regularly scheduled stewardship events, please contact the event coordinator listed in the description before arriving with a large group. This will ensure that there are enough gloves and tools for everyone to work. We are also available to schedule special service events at your group's convenience during the week or on weekends. If you are looking for community service to fulfill court requirements, please call 503-823-5121. You must be registered with our program before undertaking any community service

Other Community Service Hours

To verify participation for school or other service hour requirements, please bring your own method of tracking and check in with the Stewardship Coordinator or event leader during the event to get a signature or other verification. Please follow registration guidelines for the event you would like to participate in for service.
