Ladybug Nature Walks take place in Portland's parks and natural areas. They are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers (along with a grown-up) who want to explore in nature with a trained educator.
All public Ladybug Walks are currently canceled. We hope to resume walks as soon as we are able. For the most up-to-date information on COVID-19, please see Portland Parks & Recreation's COVID-19 Updates page.
About the Ladybug Walk program
Ladybug Nature Walks are a way for children ages 0-6 (and a grown-up) to explore a local Portland park. Nature educators guide families to notice plants and animals. Walks are child-directed and open-ended. Nature educators walk with the children in small groups. Children learn through questions, observation, and play. Groups move slowly through the park, stopping often. In this way, children have time to notice the plants and animals around them.
- While exploring with a educator, children borrow a small Ladybug backpack containing a few simple tools:
- Magnifying lens
- Small tub with a lid
- Large beads on a string for color matching
- Bug box
- Small toy insect for imaginative play
- All walks last about an hour
- Walks are geared for children 18 months-6 years (infants are welcome too!)
- No pre-registration necessary - just meet us at the meeting spot.
- Cash and checks accepted for payment. Cost is on a sliding scale ($3, $5, or $8 per participating child). No charge for adults.

We offer weekly walks for the general public, but we ask that preschool groups, classrooms, and organizations with more than five children schedule a customized group Ladybug Walk. Find information about customized group Ladybug Walks here.
