Acquisition

In 2015, the East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District (EMSWCD) awarded a $1 million grant to the City of Portland to support the acquisition of a natural area at Colwood National Golf Course in northeast Portland. This grant supportz the dedication of 37 acres as a natural area, 32 acres of to be restored as forest and wetland areas. The City originally purchased the land after The Trust for Public Land negotiated this complex and important park acquisition. The project aligns with the EMSWCD’s goals to permanently protect special natural areas and provide access to nature for local communities. More can be found here: Colwood Natural Area | EMSWCD

FootGolf at Colwood Golf Center

FootGolf (sometimes referred to as, "soccer golf") is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. The game is played with a regulation #5 soccer ball at a golf course facility on shortened holes with 21-inch diameter cups. The rules largely correspond to the rules of golf. This sport is a relatively new concept (since 2008), and is being played at golf courses throughout the world. Colwood Golf Center is pleased to introduce our own footgolf course to the Portland area.

Colwood Golf Center is an Accredited FootGolf Course of the American FootGolf League (AFGL) that promotes the sport of Footgolf under the rules and guidelines of the Federation of International Footgolf (FIFG).

FootGolf is perfect for birthday parties or group events! Contact our operations manager for more information.

History

Beginning in 2012, the Trust for Public Land (TPL) negotiated the purchase of the privately-owned 120-acre Colwood Golf Course. As part of TPL's efforts, the northern portion of the property (35 acres) was rezoned for industrial use in 2013. TPL purchased the other 85 acres of the property with the intent to sell it to the City of Portland to manage as open space. Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) and the Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) jointly purchased the 85 acres from TPL on March 28, 2014, after receiving approval from Portland City Council. PP&R operates 48 acres of the parcel as a golf facility for youth and adults. The remaining 37 acres are being restored as a natural area.

Following the City’s acquisition of the Colwood property, the Colwood Golf Course re-opened as the new Colwood Golf Center. Exciting changes are taking place at the Colwood Golf Center, most notably the transformation of the old 18-hole golf course into a highly desired par-3, 9-hole course. The Colwood Golf Center also features a revamped restaurant menu and a new driving range which has proven to be very popular.
