Gun Violence Reduction Grant Application FAQ

Q: If awarded funding, will there be an expectation of applicants to have long term funding lined up for programmatic sustainability? 

A: It is the Office of Violence Prevention's priority to invest the $600K to build capacity among small/emerging organizations. This is a one-time funding opportunity, and the organization will be asked to demonstrate how they will work to ensure successful aspects of their project/program are sustained and/or expanded beyond the period of this funding. The investments should resource the following in the funded program: 

  • Intervention case management 

  • Flexible funds for wraparound support 

  • Aftercare support funds for families of victims 

  • Capacity building in small grantees to provide services 
     

Q: If awarded funding, what are the expectations for outcomes with the GVR grant? 

A: Objectives should work to curb gun violence, promote positive identity development, family stability, and deepen engagement. Organizations will create their own scope of work and the outcomes will be primarily driven by the scope of work presented.
 

Q: Who can apply? 

A: Gun Violence Prevention Grant Program is open to organizations located in the state of Oregon providing services within the City of Portland. Priority will be given to small/emerging organizations who have never received prior funding from the Office of Violence Prevention. 
 

Q: What is capacity building? 

A: Capacity building refers to many different types of activities that are all designed to improve and enhance an organization's ability to achieve its mission and sustain itself over time. Whatever is needed to bring a nonprofit to the next level of operational, programmatic, financial, or organizational maturity, so it may more effectively and efficiently advance its mission into the future.

  • Board development 
  • Networking opportunities  
  • Organizational development 
     

Q: I am having trouble with the fillable form; can I attach my answers on a separate word document? 

A: Yes, please clearly write the answers to the questions on a separate word document.  
 

Q: I am concerned I am duplicating a program. What type of programs does OVP offer? 

A: We have parts of the Advanced Peace model incorporated with our Life Coaches and Intensive Case Manager programs. Please note, gun violence is at an all-time high, there is no lane that is currently filled.
