The 2020 Charter Commission is a once-in-a-decade opportunity for Portlanders to examine the City’s most important legal document and recommend ways the City could be more efficient and responsive to the community’s needs. This is an incredibly important opportunity, which is why we have decided to extend the application deadline to Sept. 14, 2020 at 5 p.m.

With these additional two weeks, we hope to connect with more community members, encourage them to apply to the Commission and support them in their application process.

We have heard from community members the application is long and confusing. We have heard of instances where the application was offline. By extending the deadline, we want to acknowledge these problems and offer more opportunities to answer questions and help in completing the application.

Since the beginning, our goal for the Charter Commission has been to make the process equitable and accessible. Adjusting the timeline is just one of the ways we are embedding these values. We want to empanel a Commission that is diverse and representative of all Portlanders, and to do so we need to meet the community where they’re at and respond to their needs.

As always, we welcome questions and comments on the application and review process. Please send all questions to CharterReview2020@portlandoregon.gov.
