MMIP PDX: Discussion with Mary Kathryn Nagle
Missed the discussion? You can watch a recording of the event HERE.
Until very recently, Native Americans were erased almost entirely from arts and entertainment. Mary Kathryn will discuss the connections between this erasure and the laws and policies that perpetuate the high rates of violence against Native women and children, including the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Persons ("MMIP"). Following the 2022 re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act, Mary Kathryn will discuss what local governments and local law enforcement can do to help address the epidemic of violence.
Mary Kathryn Nagle is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Nagle serves as counsel to the National Indian Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC). She has drafted and filed numerous briefs in the United States Supreme Court articulating the connection between preserving tribal sovereignty and ensuring safety for Native women and children. Nagle is also a playwright, and has written a number of plays including Manhatta (2013), Sliver of a Full Moon (2013), and Sovereignty (2015).
