Community engagement activities begin in November, 2023

Summary of activities:

From August - October, 2023: Process development phase

The City Arts Program assembled a community engagement workgroup, developed an inquiry and engagement plan, began reaching out to community partners to organize public talks and conversations.

From November 2023 - January 2024: Community engagement launch

The City Arts Program began hosting public talks and conversations, including Arts Talks on November 7, 9 and 16 with breakout sessions for community members who want to discuss the future of monuments and memorials. The City Arts Program also launched this website and a public opinion survey. Later this month, the City Arts Program will announce more public talks and conversations coming in January, and creative programming opportunities for aritsts and arts organizations.

From February - June 2024: Creative programming and analysis

The City Arts Program will collect and analyze data from its public opinion survey and community conversations, and present their findings to Portland City Council in February. At that point, Portland City Council may make some decisions about the fate of the five monuments that were toppled or removed in 2020.

Also in this phase, the City Arts Program will launch several creative programming activities designed to engage Portlanders on the future of monuments and memorials in our community. The City Arts Program will continue to analyze data and formulate policy recommendations for Portland City Council's consideration.

June, 2024: Policy decisions

The City Arts Program will deliver a final report on all of its community engagement activities, along with potential policy recommendations.
