Today, Mayor Keith Wilson and Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson declared a State of Emergency to address the prolonged period of extreme heat affecting the Portland region. This declaration takes effect immediately and will remain in place through the duration of the heat event.

The City of Portland’s Emergency Declaration ensures administrative flexibility and additional resources to support residents, businesses, and frontline staff as temperatures rise. Actions enabled by this declaration include:

  • Modify typical procurement practices.

  • Authorize overtime pay to exempt employees in consultation with Human Resources

  • Hire consultants and provisions to staff Emergency Coordination Center

  • Pursue reimbursement for expenses related to the activation.

"We’re taking this heat emergency seriously," Wilson said. "Right now, there are more than 70 safe, air-conditioned locations citywide, including shelters, libraries, community centers, malls, splash pads and park misting stations. Let us keep you cool and cared for through this heatwave."
