Mayor Wilson responds to unanimous City Council approval of Protect Portland Initiative

Statement from Portland Mayor Keith Wilson

I am proud to serve alongside the members of the Portland City Council. By unanimously approving the Protect Portland Initiative, our council sent a clear and powerful message: they are standing up for our local community, just as I did with mayors from across our region.

This initiative gives us a formal framework for the work we've already begun in responding to federal government actions that target our city. Our council's direction affirms the importance of this work and strengthens our strategy to safeguard Portland's future.

Portland will meet this moment with urgency, intention, and compassion. We are a proud sanctuary city in a sanctuary state, and we will continue to live our values – even when federal directives make it difficult. Together, we will protect what makes Portland strong: our people, our values, and our shared belief in the power of community.
