In February 2016, the City launched this program to provide day storage and other services for individuals experiencing homelessness. Lack of secure storage is a huge barrier for homeless residents in seeking services, treatment, employment, or seeing to other daily activities.
The City opened a new, brick-and-mortar storage facility at 435 NW Glisan St. in December 2023. The new site replaced the The City’s previous storage facility, a retrofitted shipping container operating on the west side of the Steel Bridge. The 4,900 square foot location greatly increased storage capacity, offers additional low barrier job opportunities, and hosts new outreach services.
The City contracts with Central City Concern (CCC) to manage and operate the storage facility, offering employment for two full time CCC Clean Start staff, plus four temporary trainee positions. These jobs provide meaningful employment opportunities to previously homeless individuals, helping them achieve economic independence while serving customers from a place of shared experience and empathy.
CCC supplements staffing with outreach workers and emergency supplies, as they are available. Outreach staff help customers who need assistance in accessing services and referrals, and distribute items like clothing and Naloxone when possible.
