The City of Portland is proud to announce Lauren Johnson has been named the new chief of the Portland Fire & Rescue Bureau – marking one of the first long-term hires for a senior leadership position in the city’s new form of government. Johnson is currently serving as an assistant fire chief at the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department, where she has worked for the past 26 years.
“It is truly an honor to be named the next Chief of Portland Fire & Rescue,” Johnson said. “I’m eager to collaborate with the dedicated team of City staff and elected officials who are passionate about shaping the future of public safety in Portland.”
Johnson’s first day will be Aug. 18.
“Chief Johnson’s deep experience and thoughtful leadership will be a strong addition to Portland Fire & Rescue. I look forward to working alongside her as we continue building a safer, more connected city for all Portlanders,” Mayor Keith Wilson said.
Interim Chief AJ Jackson will remain in her role for the next two months to help Johnson transition into the new role.
“Chief Johnson is a dedicated public servant with a stellar background and vision for our City, and we’re very excited to see her take the lead of our organization,” Interim Chief Jackson said.
Johnson will oversee Portland Fire & Rescue’s 744 employees and nearly $200 million annual budget and will report directly to Interim Deputy City Administrator for Public Safety Bob Cozzie.
“My immediate focus will be immersing myself in the department’s operations, understanding current concerns, and most importantly, getting to know the members of the department who serve the City of Portland every day,” Johnson said. “I look forward to working closely with community leaders, local organizations, and Portlanders to strengthen partnerships and create an even safer city for everyone. My family and I are incredibly excited to become a part of such a vibrant and unique community!”
Chief Johnson holds a number of professional certifications and is scheduled to graduate with her Masters in Public Service Administration in December 2025.
Johnson and her family enjoy spending time hiking, camping, and having outdoor adventures. They are excited to move to the Pacific Northwest where they can enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes. Johnson plans to partake as much as possible in Portland’s diverse culinary scene, and to read books and sip coffee at some of the city’s many locally-owned coffee shops.
