Designed by renowned architect Michael Graves, the Portland Building was constructed in 1982 as administrative offices for the City of Portland. It is an award-winning example of postmodern architecture and home to the iconic Portlandia statue, which gazes down at visitors along Fifth Avenue.
City Council directed the building's reconstruction in 2015 due to water intrusion, outdated operating systems and the need for seismic retrofitting. After a two-year transformation project, the Portland Building reopened in 2020 with new operating systems, public art, community event spaces and a customer service desk.
The building is also designed to attract and retain a talented, diverse workforce with new collaboration space, technology systems, gym, bicycle parking and other amenities. More than 1,500 City employees work in the Portland Building today, and there's room to accommodate additional staff in the future.
