Station 21

Information
Station 21 serves the industrial inner east side and the Willamette River.

Station 21 – Eastbank – Fire Boathouse

Located at 5 S.E. Madison St. between the Willamette River and East Bank Esplanade. Station 21 was originally built in 1960 and housed Fireboat 1 and Engine 7 until it was closed in the early 90s. It was opened again as a fire station in 2010 to test emergency response needs and travel times and after a successful trial run, re-opened in the summer of 2013 after the station was rebuilt to its new two-story configuration doubling the size of the existing station. The project also included the construction of a new dock and boat house. The new station was elevated above the floodplain requiring over 300 feet of shoreline stabilization using injection grouting in addition to pile support for the station. Technical goals achieved with the new station were a seismically strengthened, durable, low maintenance, gender neutral facility with access to the river for marine rescue with improved security and faster response times on both land and water. The station currently houses four firefighting and life-saving apparatus serving the city. Engine 21, a 2008 Pierce pumper, responds to calls in the Ladds Addition, Brooklyn, Buckman, and Hawthorne neighborhoods as well as the many multi-use commercial and industrial buildings and apartments in lower Southeast Portland. Fire Boat 21, named the “Kwansem” was put in service in 2016 and was built by a local company, Oregon Iron Works. The 55 foot long, military grade fire boat is powered by two 1200 hp Detroit jet engines with a fire pump capacity of 8000 gallons per minute, and has a top speed of 45 mph. Fire Boat 21’s speed and maneuverability allow it to respond and protect over 100 miles of waterfront structures within and surrounding the Portland riverfront. Rescue Boat 21, named the “Eldon Trinity” is a 2005, 32-foot Packcat Landing Craft, with twin 225 hp engines and has a top speed of 48 mph. Rescue Boat 21 was named after Eldon and Trinity Smith in memory of the tragic events that occurred on the Sellwood Bridge in May 2009. Many annual iconic Portland events pass by the doors of Station 21 creating a constant buzz of energy, including the Bridge Pedal, Hood to Coast Run, Doggy Dash, Rose Festival, The Big Float, Bike Jousting, The Naked Bike Ride, and countless runners, walkers, and cyclists.
