Fire Station 1 – Old Town
Technical Rescue Team
It’s not the oldest fire station in Portland, or the newest, or the fanciest. But it is the biggest station in the entire State of Oregon, whether you measure by personnel, response vehicles, or run volume. That’s why they call it “The Big House”. Station 1 has twelve firefighters and officers on duty every day operating the station’s Engine, Truck, and Squad – all ALS (Advanced Life Support) capable. The personnel are also trained and ready to use Trench Van 1 and USAR 1 (Urban Search and Rescue) when the need arises. Fire station 1 receives over 10,000 calls for service every year. In addition to their standard firefighting and EMS (medical) training, Station 1 members (along with their Eastside counterparts at Station 12) are trained in high angle rope (including tram), water surface, heavy machinery and vehicle entrapment, collapse, trench and tunnel rescue. They are also part of FEMA’s network of Urban Search and Rescue Teams across the country and are ready when major disaster strikes.
Originally built in 1950, Fire Station 1 received a much-needed remodel, and seismic stability upgrade to keep the station safe, healthy, and operational in 2008. Housing a dozen first responders along with a large component of administrative and support staff, the building is well used, but also very well maintained and cared for.
Having a dozen members on-duty each day makes for a lively time. The many visitors to the station can’t help but be struck by the friendly family atmosphere and the sense of camaraderie evident among the members. And like in many homes, the kitchen is one of the centers of family life. Cooking for so many is no picnic, but the Big House chefs specialize in turning out hearty, healthy meals that often attract other personnel.
