Firefighters come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing they share is a commitment to fitness. The work of firefighting is physically demanding, but it begins well before the bell goes off. The foundation for effective and safe firefighting is a strong metabolic engine, functional strength, proper lifting technique, and good mobility. Being strong is important but you want to make sure you can lift heavy, under duress, and without injury. That requires a strong core and flexibility in addition to strong upper and lower body muscles
