Firefighter academy academics

Information

The academic portion of the Firefighter Training Academy is rigorous.  Portland Fire & Rescue's (PF&R) Medical Services & Training Division requires Firefighter Recruits to score a minimum of 76% on all written exams.  Failure to achieve passing scores will result in disciplinary action up to, and including, discharge.

Recruits will be tested on PF&R's Rules and Regulations, training manual instruction, Standard Operating Procedures, General Orders and the current fire skills textbook.  Firefighter Recruits at Station 2 will also be tested on EMS protocols during the second phase of training.

During the Firefighter Recruit Program, recruits will take multiple trainers' choice quizzes, written exams, and a final, cumulative written exam.  Written exams consist of multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and essay questions.

Academic success requires that the individual spend focused time on their studies, and should come into the academy with good study skills and strategies for learning new material.
