Summer Fire Weather Draws to a Close Multnomah County Lifts Burn Ban Oct. 1

Multnomah County, OR (Sept. 21, 2023) - As the summer fire season concludes, Multnomah County Fire Chiefs have announced the upcoming end of the County Burn Ban. With cooler fall weather and anticipated rainfall, the threat of wildfires in the county will diminish.
The County Burn Ban will be lifted on October 1 in alignment with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Burn Period, allowing residents to resume outdoor burning activities safely. Multnomah County Fire Chiefs are confident that the forecasted changing weather conditions will reduce the risk of wildfires, allowing for the removal of the ban.
"While we remain vigilant in our commitment to fire safety, County Fire Chiefs are pleased to announce the end of the County Burn Ban," said Chris Barney, Defense Board Chief for the Multnomah County Fire Defense Board. "With the arrival of fall and the accompanying moisture, we anticipate a reduced risk of wildfires in our county. However, we urge all residents to exercise caution and adhere to safe burning practices."
Multnomah County Fire Chiefs and emergency services remind everyone to be cautious and responsible when engaging in outdoor burning. Ensure you have the necessary permits, follow local regulations, and exercise caution to prevent accidental fires.

Multnomah Fire Defense Board Chief Chris Barney has issued an outdoor burn ban in all areas of Multnomah County.

PORTLAND, OR – Multnomah County Fire Defense Board Chief Chris Barney has announced a burn ban for all areas of Multnomah County which will be implemented in phases over the next couple weeks. This phased in approach is intended to consider the County’s agricultural interests, as well as the Pacific Northwest Geographic Area Coordinating Center weather forecast for June and July.
The complete Burn Ban in the City of Portland, which includes recreational campfires, fire pits, and any other open burning begins on July 6, 2023.
The Multnomah County ban begins with backyard burning, which will go into effect on Friday, June 16, 2023. The last day for agricultural burning (agricultural wastes, crops, field burning, etc.) and permitted open burning (land clearing, slash, stump, debris, or controlled burning) will be June 30. The complete burn ban, including recreational campfires, fire pits, and any other open burning, begins on July 6, 2023.
These dates may change due to worsening weather conditions.
The complete Burn Ban will remain in effect from July 6 until further notice.

Outdoor barbecuing (grills, smokers, and similar cooking appliances with clean, dry firewood, briquettes, wood chips, pellets, propane, natural gas, or similar fuels) is still allowed; however, residents should exercise extreme caution. When using charcoal briquettes please properly dispose of ashes in a covered metal container away from combustibles, and keep the ashes wet for a few days before properly disposing of them. Maintain at least ten feet between outdoor cooking and anything combustible such as siding, fences, shrubbery, etc.
Smokers are reminded to ensure their cigarettes are truly out and placed in proper receptacles.
Those living in rural areas are asked to maintain their wildfire defensible space by monitoring vegetation growth surrounding homes and structures, and maintaining adequate access for firefighting equipment.

Multnomah County, Ore. - Fire Defense Board Chief Scott Lewis has lifted the outdoor burn ban in all areas of Multnomah County effective October 1, 2022. The burn ban has been lifted due to the cooler temperatures, increase in nighttime moisture, and the return of rainfall, which has improved the moisture content of the local ground cover.
Keeping in mind the recent wildfires throughout Oregon, however, please ensure any outdoor burning is conducted as safely as possible.
Recreational campfires, fire pits, and agricultural burning is now permitted on DEQ approved burn days. Yard debris and open burning is allowed only in permitted areas. Yard debris and open burning is never permitted in the City of Portland.
Yard debris burning in Troutdale and Fire District 10 will begin on Saturday, October 1st with DEQ approval.
Yard debris burning in Gresham, Fairview, and Wood Village will begin on Saturday, October 15th with DEQ approval.

The burn ban includes recreational campfires, fire pits, yard debris, agricultural burning and permits issued for open burning until further notice. Check with your local Fire Department/District for more information.
Barbecuing is still allowed; however, residents should exercise extreme caution. The burn ban is lifted due to the recent rainfall and moderate temperatures, which has improved the moisture content of the local ground cover.
Recreational campfires, fire pits and agricultural burning is now permitted on DEQ-approved burn days.
Yard debris and open burning is still not permitted; the usual start date for these is on or around Oct. 1.
