A Proud Sanctuary City
The City of Portland is committed to protecting and supporting immigrants, who contribute so much to our city's health, prosperity and vibrancy. In 2017, the City Council officially declared Portland a sanctuary city.
Standing up for Portland
City leaders will continue to stand up for Portland when federal directives clash with the law and our values. We are participating in lawsuits against the Trump administration’s executive orders that penalize sanctuary jurisdictions and attempt to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion work.
Taking a Targeted Approach to Federal Grants
Mayor Keith Wilson signed an executive order to make sure Portland continues receiving vital federal funding. His direction requires the city to comply with federal anti-discrimination law, as it's likely to be interpreted by federal courts. This means city programs and services cannot give preference to groups with “protected-class status” based on characteristics such as race or gender, unless a disparity study legally supports that preference.
What is Changing
A small subset of programs and policies.
What is Staying the Same
City values and the vast majority of programs that serve Portlanders, including people of color, women, LGBTQIAS+ people and others who have historically been left out or shut out.
