  • Through legal action and a clear purpose, Portland was able to resist a National Guard presence in our community.
  • We continue to act in unity to protect those most vulnerable from the dangerous and destabilizing actions of Immigration and Board Patrol agents. If someone in your family has been detained by ICE, call the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition Hotline at 1-888-622-1510. (Available 24/7, with language support.)
  • As a sanctuary city, we play no role in immigration enforcement. Portland police officers are here to keep Portlanders safe and support your right to free speech.
  • We cannot prevent federal agents from enforcing immigration law. We will take all legal action we can to hold those accountable who commit crimes in our city, even in the name of the federal government.

Portland Mayor Issues Statement on Shooting in Hazelwood Neighborhood

In September 2025, after weeks of escalating rhetoric, President Donald Trump announced on social media that he would send "all necessary Troops" to Portland.

Mayor Keith Wilson responded that the President will not find lawlessness or violence here and the number of necessary troops is "zero."

Mayor Wilson: Federal deployment is unwanted, unneeded, and un-American.

Local leaders, including Portland City Councilors, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, and many others have joined Wilson to denounce the federal deployment and urge Portlanders to act in peace.

The City of Portland and the State of Oregon are fought the order in court. Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said the deployment was "not acceptable" and did not meet the legal necessary requirements, since there is no invasion and no insurrection.

On Nov. 7, 2025, U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut issued a final order barring the Trump administration from deploying National Guard troops to Portland, after hearing arguments and evidence in a three-day trial.

On Dec. 23, 2025, the Supreme Court declined the federal administration's request to overturn a ruling that blocked sending federal troops to Chicago.

On Dec. 31, 2025, President Trump announced the removal of federal troops from numerous cities, including Portland. Oregon National Guard troops were never lawfully deployed to Portland.
