June Constituent Coffee at Woodstock Cafe

I'm so excited to share with you that our June Constituent Coffee will be held at the beloved ASL coffee shop, The Woodstock Café.

The Woodstock Café is so special, and I am thankful that we have such a critical resource for the Deaf community in our district. Owned and operated by Deaf Portlanders, Woodstock Café has become a hub for the Deaf community in Portland, a space for ASL learners to practice in immersion, and a neighborhood coffee shop that serves great bevvies and tasty bites.

I'm proud to host our June event at The Woodstock Café because for too long, Deaf Portlanders haven't had the access to City Hall that they deserve. So I'm bringing City Hall to the Deaf community. Because space is limited, we will prioritize seating for those who are Deaf, hard of hearing, an ally in the Deaf community, or ASL learners. 

Please feel free to share this event with Deaf Portlanders in your life! I'm hoping for a great turnout and can't wait to hear from the community.

World Cup Watch Party at Mad Greek Deli

I've had so much fun watching the World Cup this summer, so for my July constituent event, I'm hosting a semifinals watch party at the beloved Mad Greek Deli -- a community staple in our city since 1977. Join me on Wednesday, July 15th at 11:15 to gather and chat all things City Hall before the game kicks off at noon.

My District 3 Picks for June

Summer in Portland is packed, but here are my top picks for activities and community events in District 3 for early summer!

🏊🏼‍♀️ SWIMMING. We are seeing temperatures rise quickly, so it's the perfect time to cool off in a pool or a river. Here are some of my favorite ways to get into water during this time of year:

 

😂 COMEDY. In case you haven't heard, District 3 is the beating heart of the Portland comedy scene – and the summer is ripe for laughs with tons of events across the district. Here's what's on my radar for early summer:

  • Starting this weekend, The Funhouse Lounge just off Ladd's Addition is hosting Clue: An Unscripted Mystery inspired by the classic whodunnit board game (and the iconic film) on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday nights until July 4th. Doors 6:30 / show 7:00. Tickets here. 
  • Hear You Loud & Queer is Portland's premiere queer stand-up comedy show hosted by Mack Lee and Portland's Funniest Person of 2025, Ally J Ward. Come celebrate Pride and support the Q Center! June 24th at Revolution Hall, 7:00 pm. Tickets here.
  • Now in its sixth summer, Kickstand Comedy in the Park kicks off in June with some of the finest local and touring stand-ups for a free weekly al fresco set at Laurelhurst Park. Every Friday at 6:00 pm, click here for more info. 

 

🚲 BIKES. June 1st marked the official beginning of BIKE SUMMER: my favorite part of the year! Portlanders gather together to roll around our city in a spirit of celebrating all things Portland. You can check out the full calendar of group rides at Shift2Bikes, but here are some of my favorite rides coming up in District 3:

  • An annual Portland tradition since 2009, the Bike Play ride combines theater and recreation: a mobile performance powered by bike. You'll roll alongside the actors making stops along a several mile-long loop to watch the theatrical action unfold in parks, alleyways, and other found locations.   • Yard sales are one of my favorite things about summer, which is why I'm so excited that Pedalpalooza is featuring a yard sale ride this year. Join this ride that will visit Laurelhurst yard sales and find your next Portland treasure. Happening June 20th at 8:30 am. Deets here.
  • My favorite ride of the year is back for a 7th season: the Annual Cat Ride! Bring your cat! Dress up as a cat! Pet every cat! Celebrate being the best kind of person – a cat person. Happening Wednesday, June 17th at 6:30, meet up at Kennilworth Park. Details here

🌈 PRIDE. I love that in Portland we get to celebrate Pride for two months. Our official City parade may be a ways off, but I'm already in full Pride Summer mode – check out these upcoming events to celebrate the history, culture and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community:

  • Punk Rock Pride returns! On Saturday June 20th, Not a Phase PDX has produced another highly walkable music festival across three venues between 64th and 66th on SE Foster in Portland (Bar Carlo, Performance Works, Starday Tavern). Expect live music, drag bingo, and queer comedy all day. Proceeds go to Outside In. See the full schedule here. 
  • Pride is about telling our stories, and during Life Recording — Live!, Leif Olsen from theliferecording.com will record two live, audio-only interviews with members of the audience, then score a segment of those interviews to original music. June 30th at 5:30. Learn more here.
  • Portland's Butches are THRIVING thanks to the Butch Support Group, which calls itself "a mechanism for building community and friendships for Butches and those who love us." They have regular meetups that keep growing in attendance – now is the time to get involved! The next meet up is happening July 1st at Paydirt at 6:00 pm. ✊🏾 JUNETEENTH: The big Juneteenth parade might not be happening in District 3, but there are still plenty of ways to celebrate our nation's longest running Black holiday right here in the district. Here's what I'm looking forward to:

  • On June 19th, The PAM CUT Tomorrow Theater on Division will be screening the film Seeds, an intimate portrait of generations of Black farmers in the American South, followed by a panel discussion with Black leaders in Portland. Don't miss this one! More info and tickets here.
  • Whether or not you have tickets to the world famous 8 Seconds Rodeo, the afterparty at Nova PDX is guaranteed to get you in the cowboy state of mind. SWEAT N' HONEY is a celebration of all things queer Black joy – just don't forget your cowboy hat. Happening June 19th at 9:00 pm. Tickets here.
  • Kickstand Comedy is celebrating wins and community with their improv showcase All Black Everything, happening June 19th at 8:30. Get your tickets and learn more here.

 

⚽ WORLD CUP. Portlanders are gearing up to watch the biggest competition of the world's most popular sport, and District 3 is ripe with watch parties. Here are my favorite spots in D3 to catch a World Cup game (Go Paraguay!):

  • Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that Gol on Hawthorne is the go-to spot for soccer fans in Southeast Portland. With a ton of screens and an outdoor patio, the vibes are immaculate on a sunny Portland day. 
  • For those midday games that are scheduled right in the middle of your lunch break, pop on over to Mad Greek Deli on Burnside for a meze plate or spanakopita. The fans show up big here so make sure to grab a seat early.
  • For those farther east, you can't go wrong with Dingo's Pub – an Australian owned and operated sports bar in Montavilla. They're staying open for every game of the World Cup and the atmosphere promises to be bonza. 

 

🚸 KIDS. If you've got little ones, Portland is a great place to be in the summer. Whether you're cooling off at a splash pad or enjoying the A/C at a nearby theater, there's plenty to fill the days. Here are my favorite early summer activities that are family friendly:

 

🫶🏽 ORGANIZING. Finally, I want to give a shoutout to some of our allies who are doing great work in the community. Summer is a great time to get engaged in a community group or organizing project. Check out these events from our friends and give them some support:

  • Next Wednesday, June 17th, Brown Hope is hosting a Juneteenth celebration and dance party to benefit their community building work. Join them from 6:00-10:00 pm at Wonderlove Food Carts on SE Main St, more info here.
  • Our friends at Quest Integrative Health are hosting their Summer Social and Resource Fair on Friday, June 26th at their home base on SE 50th. At the social you'll find a book swap, sexual health resources, mocktails and light bites, and a clothing swap. Tell them we sent you! 
  • Local organizing hub Portland For All will be hosting a community panel on our public defense crisis next Monday, June 22nd at 5:30 pm, featuring myself, former Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt, and public defender Grant Hartley. RSVP here.

My Office in the Community

My favorite part of my job is getting out of the City Hall and among my people. Here's a snapshot of where I've been the past month:

  • Small business visits: I spent an afternoon visiting small businesses in District 3 and chatting with owners about how we can work together to make sure our economy is thriving.

  • Outside the Frame tour: This nonprofit works with unhoused youth to teach them filmmaking and photography skills so they can get connected to the arts job market.
  • NAYA Queer Prom: I was so honored to speak at this amazing event for young queer youth! 
  • ACLU Legislative Wrap Up: We joined our partners doing great work in Salem to keep the most vulnerable Oregonians protected – congrats on the passage of HB 4138!
  • Cultivate Initiatives Eat and Greet: Shoutout to Cultivate Initiatives for a successful block party – we even got to pet goats!
  • Push Movement Block Party: Our friends at Push Movement use skateboard to support youth recovery and holistic wellbeing. Check them out here!
  • Roseway Park Town Hall: Thank you to Roseway Park Neighborhood Association for this great opportunity to connect with constituents!
  • Constituent Coffee at Filipino Bayanihan Center: I had a blast meeting Filipino youth at my monthly coffee. These young people shared with us their campaign to rename Colonel Summers Park. Connect with them here. 
  • Brooklyn Bridge Naming Party: I was proud to support the Brooklyn Action Corps in their project to officially name the Holgate overpass The Brooklyn Bridge. I had a great time cutting the ribbon and walking across the bridge with my neighbors.

  • Dragon Boat: It was my second year rowing with Portland City Council dragon boat team, Paddle Portland Forward, in the Rose Festival Dragon Boat races. I had a blast!

  • Tom McCall Waterfront Park Report Briefing: Thanks to Oregon Solutions for hosting a discussion of the future of Tom McCall Waterfront Park. I'm committed to keeping our assets public so that everyone can access them.
  • Quest Pride Celebration: We had a lovely time celebrating Pride with our friends at Quest Integrative Health. Happy Pride!!
  • Cleveland High School Groundbreaking: I can't believe it's finally here – we have officially broken ground on the new Cleveland High School building, due in 2029. It was great to celebrate with the community.
  • Community Warehouse Anniversary Party: Community Warehouse is an incredible resource in our City – they provide furniture and other household goods free of charge for those who need them. They had tons of interactive stations where we learned more about their work, like how they donated almost 4,000 mattresses last year in Portland.
  • IRCO Engage Summer Sendoff: It was great to connect with emerging leaders who have spent the past year growing their civic skills. We gave them a tour and got to chat about their vision for Portland.
  • Moda Listening Sessions: This past weekend, I attended listening sessions about the Moda Center in District 3. Thanks to everyone who showed up in 90 degree weather to give us your feedback!

Summer Resources

In Portland, we look out for each other. Here are some community resources to help you stay cool, stay informed, and help your neighbors do the same:

  • It's getting HOT. Multnomah County keeps a regularly updated, interactive map of where to find cooling centers in your area. Check it out here. 
  • Sunshine Division has opened a brand new free market at their headquarters in Slabtown, as well as one near 122nd Ave. Sign up for an appointment here.
  • Now through June 30th, you can access eviction prevention funds through Multnomah County's Bienestar de la Familia program by contacting 211info and asking for emergency rent assistance to prevent eviction. Here's how to access that assistance.
  • Portland Parks and Recreation is offering free swim classes the week of June 22nd through June 26th – sign up here.
