Portland City Councilors Avalos, Dunphy, Green, Kanal, Koyama Lane, and Morillo unite as allies to advance their shared values

Councilors Candace Avalos, Jamie Dunphy, Mitch Green, Sameer Kanal, Tiffany Koyama Lane, and Angelita Morillo are meeting weekly to unite as allies to discuss shared values and advance a new form of government that truly represents the people of Portland.

The six councilors recognized early on that they entered office with like-minded values. These values include economic, racial, and climate justice; defending marginalized communities; empowering the working class; decriminalizing poverty; housing abundance; and police accountability.

They recognize that traditional political systems are not designed to enable the success of newly elected officials who come from the very marginalized communities they are elected to defend. As such, they meet regularly to discuss how to stay aligned in those values and how to be successful in this form of government.

As colleagues, the six councilors are committed to uplifting each other’s voices, helping each other navigate complex and often obscure systems, and figuring out how to embed their shared values in everything they do, such as running their offices, connecting with constituents, or promoting needed changes and improvements.

By working in solidarity, they are creating a new standard for representation at City Hall that delivers the government Portlanders deserve.
