Councilor Avalos Responds to Preliminary Budget Recommendations, Concern for Housing Production

Portland, OR – Yesterday, Council Member Avalos received a high-level overview of the City Administrator’s preliminary budget recommendations. As Chair of the Homelessness and Housing Committee and member of the Finance Committee, Councilor Avalos is eager to delve deeper into the budget details, ensuring her critical policy priorities are addressed.

“I am focused on prioritizing high-level objectives, particularly in light of the proposed cuts to Permitting and Development,” said Avalos. “At a time when we are already falling short of our development goals, we cannot afford to scale back investment in housing production.”

To meet Portland’s growing housing needs, the City must build at least 5,000 new units annually. Councilor Avalos emphasized that her efforts will center on identifying opportunities to increase housing production and remove barriers to development.

“Housing stability is fundamental to the well-being of our residents, and we must take bold steps to ensure the City keeps pace with the demand,” Avalos added. “This budget will shape the future of our city, and I am committed to working collaboratively to secure the resources necessary for long-term, stable housing solutions.”

As the budget review process continues, Councilor Avalos looks forward to working with stakeholders, fellow council members, and community advocates to ensure Portland’s housing goals remain a top priority.
