From April 28 through May 2, the Portland Office of Violence Prevention took part in National Youth Violence Prevention Week with youth-focused activities, community engagement, and uplifting events designed to promote safety, wellness, and belonging.
National Youth Violence Prevention Week Activities
The City of Gresham Youth Services & Recreation team kicked things off with a high-energy Youth Basketball Tournament at Rockwood Prep on Sunday, April 27. It was an afternoon filled with friendly competition, music, food, and a strong sense of community spirit.
On Monday, the Rose City Self-Defense team partnered with Girl Scouts Troop #22380 for a private event focused on safety skills, empowerment, and confidence building. The troop participated in hands-on learning led by skilled instructors in a supportive environment.
Midweek events included the Torch of Hope Community Clean-Up Day at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, offering youth and community members an opportunity to give back and help beautify the neighborhood. Gresham’s team held an Underground PDX CrossFit’s Youth & Families Night at The HOPE Center, where participants came together for an evening of fitness, food, and connection.
On Thursday, the ARIO Youth Co-Ed Basketball Tournament brought together students from across Portland-area school districts for an exciting tournament, while David Douglas High School hosted its annual AANHPI Month Celebration, honoring the cultures and contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
Throughout the week, Office of Violence Prevention staff were proud to spotlight the leadership and creativity of young people who are taking an active role in shaping safer, healthier communities.
To wrap up and celebrate the week, a free viewing of the new Minecraft movie was held on Friday, May 9 for the participating youth from the current Safer Portland Grant.
