Donate or give it away

Label: Information
Donating, giving things away, or sharing them through your community helps useful items stay in use longer, supports local organizations, and can make it easier for someone else to find what they need.

Just because you're done with something doesn't mean someone else can't use it. If something is still in good condition, instead of tossing it in the garbage, donate it or give it away to someone who can use it.

How to use this guide

This guide can help you decide whether to donate, give it away, or share it with your community. You'll also find tips for preparing items so they're more likely to find a new home.

When you're ready, visit the Map and Resource Directory to find local donation organizations, sharing groups, and swap opportunities.

Get it ready for its next home

Before donating or giving something away:

  • Clean it if possible.
  • Make sure it's complete and in working condition.
  • Include instructions or any parts you still have.
  • Remove personal information from electronics.
  • Ask yourself whether you'd feel comfortable giving it to a friend or neighbor.

Items in good condition are more likely to be accepted and used again.

Donate or give it away?

Both keep useful items in circulation—they just work a little differently.

Donate

Choose this when you'd like to support a nonprofit or community organization. Many organizations accept furniture, clothing, books, household goods, tools, building materials, and more.

Not everything can be donated: Organizations can only accept items they have room for and can safely resell or distribute. Always check donation guidelines before dropping items off.

Give it away

Neighborhood sharing groups, community swaps, and friends or family are great options when you'd like to pass something directly to another person.

Think beyond thrift stores

There are lots of ways to pass something along.

Consider:

  • Community sharing groups
  • Swap events
  • School or workplace exchanges
  • Apartment or neighborhood sharing shelves
  • Friends, family, and neighbors

Sometimes the easiest solution is simply asking if someone could use it.

If an item can't be donated, see whether it can be repaired, recycled, or disposed of safely instead.

Quick tips

  • Donate while items are still in good condition.
  • Wash clothing before donating.
  • Bundle related items together when possible.
  • Don't leave donations outside after hours.
