You might be surprised by how many things you can borrow. It's a simple way to save money, reduce clutter, and try something before deciding whether you want to own it.
How to use this guide
This guide shares ideas for what you can borrow or rent, when it makes the most sense, and practical tips to help you get started.
When you're ready, browse the Map and Resource Directory to find local borrowing, rental, and sharing opportunities across Portland.
Tools and equipment
Need tools or equipment for a weekend project? Start with your local neighborhood tool library.
Portland's neighborhood tool libraries lend everything from drills and tile saws to ladders and lawn tools. Most offer free memberships to Portland residents with proof of address, making them a great place to start for home repairs, gardening, and DIY projects.

If borrowing isn't an option, many local businesses rent specialty equipment for longer projects or items tool libraries may not carry. Local businesses rent everything from floor sanders and carpet cleaners to excavators and landscaping equipment, and many offer convenient delivery and pickup services.
Party and event supplies
Hosting a birthday party, family gathering, neighborhood event, or celebration? Hosting a celebration doesn't mean you have to buy everything you'll only use once.
Consider borrowing or renting:
- Reusable party kits with plates, cups, utensils, serving supplies, and decorations.
- Folding tables, chairs, serving trays, yard games, and decorations from friends, neighbors, or Buy Nothing groups.
- Tents, linens, sound equipment, and other larger event supplies from local rental businesses.
Borrowing what you need can save money, reduce waste, and free up storage space after the event.

Outdoor recreation and hobbies
Trying a new hobby or planning an adventure? You don't have to own everything to try something new.
- Start by checking your local library: Public libraries offer much more than books. The Multnomah County Library lends museum and attraction passes, seed collections, activity kits, and other specialty items that help you learn, explore, and try something new.
- Planning to spend time outdoors? Renting camping, climbing, paddleboarding, or snow gear lets you enjoy the adventure without investing in equipment you may only use occasionally.

Kids and family
Need something for kids? Kids outgrow things fast. Before buying new, see what you can borrow, share, swap, or find through your community. Books, toys, baby gear, strollers, sports equipment, costumes, and learning materials often have plenty of life left.
Good places to start:
- Multnomah County Library and toy libraries
- Parent groups, school, or childcare communities
- Kids clothing swaps
- Buy Nothing groups
- Friends, family, and neighbors
These are also great places to pass things along when your child is done with them.
