How to throw a low-waste birthday party

Information
Whether you’re hosting at home or heading out for an activity, here are easy, affordable ideas for fun, creative children’s birthday celebrations, without the waste.

Costume swap and dress-up photo party

How it works:

Invite guests to bring gently used costumes that their kids no longer wear.

  1. Set up a “swap table” where everyone can browse and choose something new-to-them.
  2. Create a dress-up corner with mirrors, props (hats, sunglasses, scarves), and space to try things on.
  3. Add a DIY photo booth with a backdrop (a decorated sheet or wall) and fun signs or frames.
  4. Kids can pose, play, and parents can snap pics.

Guests can take home a costume at the end. Donate any extras or post them for free on a Buy Nothing group, Craigslist, or Nextdoor

Tip: Thrift stores and children's consignment shops are great places to find low-cost dress-up props.

Craft parties

Use reused craft supplies from SCRAP PDX or collected from friends, neighbors, or your local Buy Nothing group.

Food: Less packaging, less waste

  • Serve finger foods that don’t need extra plates or utensils
  • Buy snacks in larger containers and portion them into bowls or reusable cups
  • Send leftovers home in clean, reused containers or encourage guests to bring their own containers to take home cake and snacks.

You can save money and avoid waste by using real plates and cups you already have, or borrow from a friend or neighbor. Set up a box or tub marked “dirty dishes” to prevent your sink or kitchen counter from getting overwhelmed.

Host a gift-free party

Many parents are opting for gift-free parties if their kids already have more than enough toys.

Let guests know in your invite not to bring gifts. A simple line like, “Your presence is the only present we need.” is a nice way to send the message.

Skipping gifts saves guests time, money, and the stress of shopping and helps parents avoid the pile-up of toys and packaging.

Instead of goody bags, host a used book or toy swap.

  1. Encourage guests to bring a gently used children’s book or toy.
  2. Set up a table where everyone can pick a new-to-them book or toy to take home.
  3. Donate leftover books or toys or give them away through your local Buy Nothing group or Nextdoor.

It's a fun, no-cost way to promote sharing, reading, and playing.

Destination party

Looking for a party with less prep? Choose local spots that support reuse and creativity:

It makes a difference!

Every reused costume, real plate, and swapped book helps cut down on waste, conserve energy, protect natural resources, and reduce pollution from manufacturing and shipping new products [EPA].

These small choices teach kids that celebrating doesn’t have to mean throwing things away. In fact, it can be even more fun.
