Meet the Experts: Learn about Digital Justice, Digital Rights, and Surveillance Technologies

Community Event
This event is open to all Portlanders. This is a space for collaborative digital literacy. As the City looks to build a proactive privacy and surveillance technology policy, we need to build new partnerships with communities on digital justice.

Event details

Please join us on October 9th from 10am to 12pm for an exciting opportunity to speak with local and national digital justice experts.

For the first hour, community experts will share information and experiences related to:

  • digital rights

  • privacy impacts on communities

  • how responsible use of technology empowers communities and nurtures resilience and social development

For the second hour, you will be able to speak directly with these experts to share your own experiences and ask questions. They are prepared to talk about privacy, surveillance technologies, connections between surveillance and immigration, civil rights, civil oversight, or other relevant topics you’re interested in.

The first hour will be recorded so we can share this amazing digital literacy opportunity with more people after the event.

The City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability’s Smart City PDX team and our partners in the Office of Equity and Human Rights are coordinating this event. We'll be there to help facilitate.

Background on City of Portland Privacy and Surveillance Policy Development

At this moment, the City of Portland does not have a comprehensive surveillance or a privacy policy. Smart City PDX and Office of Equity and Human Rights team are coordinating policy development actions. These policies need to be informed by those most impacted.

Negative impacts of surveillance technologies are disproportionately experienced by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities.

Modern uses of technology and information have enabled many conveniences and enhanced the ability to create wealth and comfort to many. However, the distribution of these benefits has not been accessible to all. Abuses of technology can endanger people’s freedoms, civil rights, and liberties.

Several co-design policy events will be coming up this Fall. Read more about our policy roadmap and engagement plan.

Digital Justice is a term based on the idea that technology and information need to be used fairly and enable people’s digital rights. Digital Rights are an extension of human rights in the digital world.
