WANTED: Candidates for new Chief Sustainability Officer for the City of Portland

News Article
The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability is looking for a passionate and skilled manager to lead the City of Portland’s renowned climate and sustainability work.

With each week it seems another climate catastrophe is in the news. Whether it’s near or far away, it’s becoming harder to ignore the effects of climate change on our environment, our communities, and our health and well-being.

So, what to do about climate change? The task is so massive, the cost so great … how can we move the dial fast enough to stop global warming and all the environmental, economic and social disasters that ensue?

For decades, the City of Portland has been doing climate action. From the nation’s first climate action plan in 1993 to exemplary land-use planning, from a nationally recognized recycling program to a first-of-its-kind community benefits fund, the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) has been a leader in climate justice, compact development, sustainable consumption and green energy.

But taking this work to the next level requires more focused leadership. So BPS is seeking a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO), a key position within the bureau and the City, to champion a sustainable and equitable low-carbon future for all Portlanders.

The new CSO will oversee the City of Portland’s sustainability portfolio and staff, including the climate action program, the clean air program, and solid waste and recycling programming. The CSO will also help to stand up and lead a new sustainability commission and be a part of the bureau’s leadership team — all while leading with racial equity and using a social- and climate-justice lens.

The Chief Sustainability Officer will be a climate ambassador to other bureaus, community partners, and impacted communities, fortifying existing partnerships and building new relationships for climate action. Are you that person?
