Free Brick Day

Need to replace a few bricks in your patio? Working on a small garden bed border? Want a piece of Portland history? Come get some free bricks!

As part of the deconstruction of the Centennial Hall building on the UO Portland campus (formerly Concordia University), bricks are being made available to the public at no cost.

Brick collection information

You are welcome to take a load of bricks in your personal vehicle. We recommend planning for about 2-3 buckets' worth of bricks at most – this is a lot of weight for most passenger vehicles.

The bricks have not had the original mortar removed, although much of it comes off readily with tapping/scraping. We recommend you plan for a mess and line your vehicle with a tarp, disposable plastic bags, or a drop cloth to manage dust and debris. The bricks will be piled loosely.

The construction site is relatively flat but may contain broken concrete and debris from the deconstruction project, including wood waste, screws, nails, and dust.

REQUIRED: Gloves and closed-toe, sturdy shoes. No sandals or open footwear permitted. Gloves are also required because bricks may have rough, uneven edges. Please avoid carrying too much weight to avoid injury.

FAQ

Will there be assistance for people with limited mobility?

If you can drive to the site and would like a small number of bricks, we can help you load them into your vehicle.

Will you offer other dates for brick collection?

No. Deconstruction activities will be completed on site, and the final demolition of the building foundation will begin shortly, so we cannot host additional free material days.

Will you deliver bricks to my house?

No, bricks are available for pickup only; unfortunately, deliveries cannot be arranged.

Can I take larger quantities of bricks, like 1-2 pallets worth?

No, unfortunately, that isn't possible at this site.

Hazardous Risk Notice: Hazardous material abatement was completed on this site to remove materials containing asbestos and lead. While the abatement process captures the vast majority of hazardous materials, any materials remaining on site may contain minute amounts of dust from other materials. The collection of salvaged bricks is at your own risk.
