Dumpster Day Events (2021–2025)

Thank you to everyone who participated in Dumpster Days and helped make the events a success from 2021 to 2025. These events were funded as a temporary program to help address bulky waste that built up during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program has now ended. The City has shifted its focus to supporting community-led and community-based cleanup events.

Upcoming community waste collection events

In addition to your year-round disposal and donation options, you can dispose of, recycle, and donate your unwanted household items at these upcoming community-led events. The following event links will take you away from the City of Portland website to community websites.

Community-based organization events

The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability supports nonprofit partners in their work to offer bulky waste disposal services directly to Portlanders in multifamily communities and to community members with limited mobility or access to transportation.

In 2025, this included:

  • 28 events
  • 1,315 households served
  • 64 tons (128,000 pounds) of waste collected
  • 299 cubic yards of material reused or recycled, plus more that was shared within the community

These events were organized by:

  • Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA)
  • REACH CDC
  • Sabin CDC
  • Guerreras Latinas
  • Trash for Peace
  • Home Forward
  • Taking Ownership PDX

We support these community-based organization events by covering all disposal costs and providing financial support for event planning and promotion. Some events receive additional support through Metro’s Regional Refresh Fund.

City support for community-based events is provided by the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) and funded by the Public Environment Management Office (PEMO).

Year-round large item disposal & donation options

Curbside collection of bulky waste

Houses, duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes: Your garbage company can pick up oversized items right from the curb, at rates set by the City. Contact your garbage company to get a cost estimate and pick-up date.

Curbside bulky waste collection

Apartments: Ask your property manager where to put large items for disposal.

Junk removal companies

There are many businesses that will clear out and clean up your unwanted stuff and haul it away directly from your house, garage, driveway, or apartment.

Do a web search for “junk removal Portland” to find options. We recommend getting multiple quotes.

Drop-off & donation options

If you're not sure if something could be donated or recycled or if it's hazardous waste, search Metro’s Find a Recycler tool, call 503-234-3000, or submit a question.

Or take a look at these drop-off and pick-up options for recycling, donation, and disposal.
