Internal Data Sharing Best Practices

The City Data Governance Committee has begun scoping and brainstorming strategies to establish best practices for internal data sharing across the City and will collaborate with other City teams to implement these strategies. Key deliverables in progress include help guides for sharing, flowcharts and risk assessments to aid decision making, and a risk assessment checklist. Currently, the Committee is focused exclusively on internal data sharing, with plans to address external data sharing needs in the summer. Stay tuned for these important resources as the Committee's work evolves. If you have any questions or ideas, reach out to your representative.

Demographic Data Standards

The demographic data standards on housing status, living status, household size, income, age, education, employment, location, place of birth, gender identity, and sexual orientation have been set and the guidance and administrative rule text finalized. It has now moved into the administrative rule amendment process, to amend the existing Administrative Rule for demographic data standards, 18.03. Once amended, we will share here.

City Data Steward Log

As a reminder, the City Data Governance Committee has voted to approve the role of a City Data Steward. Read more about the role in our last update here. The documentation formally describing the role and an implementation guide are available on the City Data Governance intranet.

As a part of the implementation strategy for the Data Stewards, a City Data Steward Directory has been established to increase transparency and visibility. If you have identified a City Data Steward, please put your information in the Smartsheet, linked here. If you have any questions or need clarification, reach out to your representative or reach out to Mahria Lebow, Data Governance Analyst at mahria.lebow@portlandoregon.gov.

Future Directions – Roadmap

As shared in our previous newsletter, the Data Governance Analyst spent time this summer having conversations with all voting Committee members and their colleagues about current governance priorities and challenges. Below is the roadmap and what lies ahead for the Data Governance Committee based on priorities expressed by Committee members. Stay tuned for this work as the new year progresses!
